2002 Naroda Patiya case:Gujarat HC acquited Maya Kodnani, upheld Babu Bajrangi's conviction

NEW DELHI: Gujarat HC today acquitted former minister Maya Kodnani while support the conviction of Bajrang Dal leader Babu Bajrangi in connection with the 2002 Naroda Patiya massacre case in which  97 lives were taken. However, the Apex court sentenced Bajrangi to 21 years in prison.

The court found not guilty to Kodnani. She was earlier convicted and sentenced to 24 years imprisonment as Court gave her a benefit of doubt.

In its order, the court reserved the judgment of 29 accused acquitted earlier by a special SIT court. It is noted that the top court also turned down a plea of the victims for compensation.

Today's judgment came against an earlier order of the special SIT court found guilty 32 persons including Kodnani to life imprisonment in links with the 2002 Naroda Patiya massacre.

The Naroda Patiya massacre took placejust one day after the Godhra carnage incident.

In 2012, special judge Jyotsna Yagnik sentenced 32 persons including former minister Maya Kodnani and Bajrangi and acquitted 29 others. Kodnani punished for a 28-year jail term while Bajrangi was sentenced imprisonment till his last breath. Ten persons awarded jail for 31 years, while the rest were handed down 24-year term of custody.
