His real name is Sampooran Singh Kalra but he took the pen name Gulzar Deenvi and later shortened it to Gulzar. Before becoming lyricist he used to work as the touch-up guy for cars in a garbage. He got his big break with the film Bandini. In 1971, he wrote ‘Humko Mann ki shakti Dena’ which sung as a Prayer in School. He also wrote many songs for the children which includes chaddi Pahen Ke Phool Khila hai and Motu or Patlu ki Jodi.

He has always been fond of the Bengali culture which he was influenced to through Bimal Roy and Hrishikesh Mukherji. Even he is married to the famous Bengali actress, Raakhee. For his movie Koshish, he learned sign language so that he could connect to their emotions correctly. Since then he has been working for the deaf and dumb children.
