After the suspension of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) for two years from the Indian Premier League (IPL), Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) and Gujarat Lions (GL) entertained the cricket fans by playing excellence cricket. After RPS ended up being the runners-up in 2017, many were of the view that the coordinators might want to keep hold of the two teams from 2018 – building it a ten-team tournament.

While the Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman Rajeev Shukla had made clear that the new franchises won't hang on to - which will carry on to be an eight-team contest, former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly once again proposed the idea during the conference between franchise owners and the IPL governing committee on Tuesday.

Ganguly attended the meeting through Skype, recommended to go ahead with 10 IPL teams in place of eight from 2018. though, the idea was turned down by all franchise owners - who commonly said that the Indian board should bond with eight teams.

When questioned whether BCCI will put in two more teams to the tournament, Shukla had said after IPL 2017, "No additional room is being given to both the teams (RPS and Lions). The agreement was only for two years. Even if we make it a 10-team league, the two new teams would have to be newly bid, so they (RPS and GL) are not being given any lean-to or anything."
