India after Day 1 at 2018 Youth Olympics win 2 Silvers, get first judo medallist Tababi Devi

On the first day of the 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games which is being held in Argentina’s capital city  Buenos Aires, India bagged two silver medals. Tushar Mane won in shooting while Tababi Devi Thangjam has become India's first judo medalist after losing to Venezuela's Maria Giminez in finals of women's 44kg category. With this India stood at 11th place in Medal table at the End of Day-1 of the Youth Olympic Games 2018.

The 2017 Asian Cadet champion Tababi Devi hails from Manipur. She lost 0-2 to Gimenez who is a Pan American U18 Championships gold medalist. Talking about the points so Gimenez scored 1-0 on the ippon, 1-0 on waza-ari  while her opponent Tababi was handed 1 penalty point. The match was finished in 2:08.

On her way to the final clash she thrashed Ana Viktorija Puljiz of Crotia 10-0 in the semifinals. Earlier, she striked Bhutan’s Yangchen Wangmo 10-0 in the elimination Round of 16 before getting the better of Erza Muminoviq of Kosovo in the quarterfinals.

Worth mention here India has 46 athletes representing the nation in 13 sports at the prominent event which catering to the youth. On a related note this is India’s largest contingent at the Youth Olympics. In the last year Youth Olympics in 2014 held in China’s Nanjing, India bagged only two medals including silver and a bronze.
