Minister of State for External Affairs General V.K. Singh informed the Lok Sabha that the government will not be considering any proposal to sign Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons Treaty as a prerequisite for joining Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG).

“India's position on the NPT remains unchanged. There is no proposal under consideration of the Government to sign the NPT as a precondition for joining the NSG,” said Singh.

He was replying to a question raised in the lower house, former army chief also informed that India’s application to join NSG is yet under consideration by the group.

“The government continues to engage with the NSG and its members at appropriate levels for a decision on India's application,” added General VK Singh.

Further, he informed that India’s willingness to enter the NSG is not being opposed by the other members of the group. However, other members are objecting to the non-NPT status of India as it is a hindrance to the procedure to join the group.

China has been blocking India’s entry into the group while many leading nations including the USA and France are supporting India’s entry in the group.
