NEW DELHI: On the 8th day Seema Punia and Navjeet Dhillon opened India's account in athletics at the 2018 Commonwealth Games by delivering silver and bronze medals respectively in the women's discus throw final .

 They helped in India's medal tally extending to 31 with 14 gold, 7 silver and 10 bronze medals.

Seema threw 60.41m in her first shot that turned out be her best attempt out of six throws. Fellow citizen Navjeet, who was at fourth spot at the back New Zealand's Sositina Hakeai, saved the best for the last as she delivered a throw of 57.43m in her sixth and last attempt.

Dani Stevens from Australia created Games Record with 68.26m throw to settle the gold medal.

This is Seema's fourth consucutive medal overall at the Commonwealth Games. In 2006 she won silver, bronze in 2010 and silver in 2014.

 34 year old Seema confirmed her place for the CWG with a 61.05m throw which was the second best of her career at NIS Patiala during the 22nd Federation Cup National Senior Athletics Championships.

Earlier,  Seema clinched a bronze medal at the World Junior Championships 2002. At the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, she picked her first medal in a multi-sport jumbo carnival by grabbing silver but then allegedly got involved in a doping controversy just before the Doha Asian Games.  She skipped it in 2014, Seema won her only gold in a multi-sport carnival so far at the Incheon Asian Games.
