With the sincere efforts of the Government and the citizens of the country, India has witnessed a great progress in the condition of it's females. It is indeed a pleasure to inform you that Indira Banerjee, the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court has recently been offered to serve as a judge in the Supreme Court of India.

 

As per the reports, Indira Banerjee would hence be eighth woman judge, after Fathima Beevi, Sujata V. Manohar, Ruma Pal, Gyan Sudha Misra, Ranjana Prakash Desai, R. Banumathi and Indu Malhotra. Accprding to an official statement released by the court, "In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Kumari Justice Indira Banerjee, Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, to be a judge of the Supreme Court of India with effect from the date she assumes charge of her office."

 

On April 5, 2017, Indira Banerjee started serving as the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court. Banerjee also has the honor of being the second woman under whose leadership, the Madras High Court functions. The first women head of the Madras High Court was Justice Kanta Kumari Bhatnagar.
