Since 2013, the United Nations has celebrated the International Day of Happiness as a way to recognize the significance of happiness in the lives of people around the globe.

“SHARE HAPPINESS AND BE PART OF SOMETHING AMAZING”

This year's theme is Share Happiness - focusing on the importance of relationships, kindness and helping each other.

Take part in the International Day of Happiness 2018 to make someone happy.

It is an annual event which is celebrated all over the world. The first International Day of Happiness was observed, on March 20, 2013.This event is celebrated in 193 countries, 2 observer states and in 11 territories as The Sun reported.

The day was created by a special advisor to the United Nations known as Jayme Illien.

Jayme was first who brought up the idea of creating a new day to celebrate happiness in 2011.

The idea was even backed by former, Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki Moon, who agreed it and was ready to make it an official international day on UN calendar .

Jayme wrote UN resolution 66/281 titled “International Day of Happiness” which all UN member states have adopted by undisputed decision on June 28, 2012.

Jayme selected March 20 for International Day of Happiness because it agrees with the March equinox.

The March equinox is when night time and day time are nearly the same length – almost 12 hours each.

The word equinox comes from Latin which has meaning “equal night”.

This occurs because it is the moment when the Sun crosses the celestial equator.

The UN just launched 17 Sustainable Development Goals that seek to put stop poverty, reduce inequality, and protect the earth -these three key aspects lead to well-being and happiness.

The United Nations invites each person of any age, plus every classroom, business and government to celebrate the International Day of Happiness through education and public-awareness rising.
