Students from the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) got into a clash with the Delhi police on Monday. The students were protesting in front of Vasant Kunj police station against a professor whom they alleged had sexually harassed students in the classroom.

Following the clash, a police official spoke to the media and informed about the status of the case.

“Matter is being dealt according to law. Notice has been issued and Atul Johri has been called tomorrow to join the investigation,” said Milind Dumbere, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South)

On Sunday, nine female students filed complaints against Professor Atul Johri with the police. The students accused him of sexual misconduct and abuse of power. Johri is a professor at the School of Life Sciences at the university.

According to the students, Atul Johri is backed by the right-wing outfit. He is said to be a ‘favorite nominee’ for several committees of the vice-chancellor of the university.

“Recognising his position in power corridors and his efforts to interfere and tamper [with] evidence, it is important to immediately suspend and arrest Prof. Atul Johri,” said Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union in a statement.

On Sunday evening, a Twitter campaign was launched by the students with a hashtag SuspendJohri, demanding action against the professor.
