Capt. Vikram Batra who was accorded Param Vir Chakra which is India’s highest and most esteemed award for courage, posthumously for his actions during the Kargil war in 1999 was the unforgatable hero of Kargil war. After 19 years of this assault war he is still in the memories of all Indians.
Capt Batra had joined Indian Military Academy (IMA) at Dehradun in 1996. He had passed out from there in December 1997. He was made to order into the 13th battalion of Jammu and Kashmir Rifles. Captain Vikram Batra had left his job in Merchant Navy only to serve his country.
‘Yeh Dil maange more’ was the most famous coding words of Vikram Batra to report about his achievement to his commanders via radio message from point 5140. Capt. Vikram, who led the toughest mountain fighting, was repeatedly referred as Sher Shah in the messages cut off by the Pakistani Army.
After he accomplished his schooling in Palampur, Vikram Batra took admission in DAV College, Sector 10 of Chandigarh.He passed his B.Sc in Medical Science in 1995. Vikram was a ‘C’ certificate holder in NCC and took part in Republic Day parade in 1994. Vikram Batra was also a green-belt holder in Karate and national level player of table tennis.
Vikram Batra passed away while battling enemies on July 7, 1999, at point 4875 in Kargil sector. He had gun down five Pakistani soldiers in a battle assault at point 4875.
