Karnataka-countdown of 24 hours: Will Lingayat MLAs support B S Yeddyurappa?

NEW DELHI: Amid much hullaballoo BJP leader B S Yeddyurappa on Thursday took oath for the third time as Karnataka chief minister after Governor Vajubhai Vala( Who was minister when Modi was Gujarat CM) invited him to form the government and confirm his majority on the floor of the House in 15 days.

To increase its numbers, the saffron party is looking for support from Lingayat MLAs in opponent camps who could be discontented at the Congress-JD(S) coalition that seeks to throw H D Kumaraswamy(Son of HD DEVE GOWDA), a Vokkaliga, as CM.

There are about a dozen Lingayat MLAs in Congress and JD(S) who could unite around to supporting BS Yeddyurappa, well thought-out the tallest politician from the community. The Lingayat community backed BJP, mainly rejecting Congress's move to put forward religious minority status to Lingayats, choosing instead to support their leader for the CM post.

Worth mentioning here Vokkaligas and Lingayats have been politically divided ever since Kumaraswamy's negative response to turn down the CM's chair in 2007 and honor a tenure-sharing pact with BJP.

BJP is also seeking at some three-four other MLAs to touch the majority mark for the required numbers of 112, and this would mean the legislators who have been enticed could be asked to vote in support Yeddyurappa in a trust vote.
