Kerala: A 39-year-old woman was arrested by the Kannur city police on the charges of physically assaulting her 90-year-old grandmother on Monday. The woman is identified as Deepa and the grandmother as Kalyani.

In videos shot on cell phones by Deepa’s neighbours, Deepa is seen slapping and hitting Kalyani with chappals, her hands and a towel. While the helpless old woman cried in pain, Deepa continued to hit her. Though aware of being shot by neighbours, she even scowled at her neighbours for shooting and protesting her violent actions.

Her arrest was confirmed by a police officer at the Kannur city police station. She is booked for assaulting elderly persons. A copy of the complaint registered has been sent to the state human rights commission.

Deepa, a resident of Ayyikara, lives along with her mother Janaki, grandmother and two young children in Uppayi Valappu in Kannur city. A complaint against the accused was filed earlier, however, the police could not proceed due to lack of evidence then. Reportedly, Deepa has been separated from her husband and physically assaults her mother too. The family is said to be not well off financially.

Following the arrest, Deepa’s family has been shifted to a shelter maintained by a self-help group.
