HOLI-  THE  FESTIVAL OF LOVE AND COLOURS 

In this year Holi is going to fall on 2 March and as soon as Holi arrives, it sets everyone into a festive and jubilant mood due to the many wonderful customs and practices connected with this event. The main reason for celebrating this festival is to unite families and people together on a common bond of humanity and seek the divine blessings together for prosperity in life. Let us throw some light on some important aspects of the festival Holi.

According to a Hindu Legend, Hiranyakshyap was a powerful king who hated Lord Vishnu and saw himself above the Lord. To his dismay, his own son Prahlad turned out to be an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu. Hiranyakashyap could not digest his son’s devotion to Lord Vishnu. Hiranyakshyap and Holika conspired to kill Prahlad. Holika who had a boon of entering into the fire and come out unharmed entered the pyre with little Prahlad.Prahlad for his devotion to Lord Vishnu came out of the fire unharmed while Holika was burnt into ashes for her evil motives. This incident holds an important part in Hindu mythology as it preaches the power of devotion, faith, and the victory of good over evil. 

HOLIKA DAHAN PUJA PROCEDURE 

Holika Dahan or Holi Puja is conducted one day before Holi on an auspicious time in the evening on the Basant Panchami day. People collect woods, twigs, branches, dried leaves from different places. The bonfire is made and sculpture of Holika and Prahlad is placed on the huge heap of woods. The bonfire is set alight and the people chant Rakshoghna Mantras of the Rig Veda to cast away the evil spirits. The ashes left over are collected the following morning on the day of Holi and are smeared on the limbs as Holi Prasad, as they are considered holy.

HOLIKA DAHAN PUJA MATERIALS

This Puja requires a bowl of water, beads made of cow dung, rice, roli, dhoop sticks, cotton threads, pieces of turmeric, Moong lentils, Batasha, coconut and Gulal powder. Newly harvested crops of wheat and gram are also used during the puja. For the puja, women make garlands with beads of cow dung and use Roli, rice which is not broken. The place where the bonfire is set is washed with cow dung and the holy water of Ganga. A wooden pole is kept in the centre and it is surrounded by cow dung garlands and cow dung toys known as gulari, bharbholiye or badkula.

HOLIKA DAHAN RULE

All the auspicious tasks are prohibited during the period of Holi. On the day of Purnima, Bhadra should not prevail. The Purnima should prevail in the Pradosh Kaal. Purnima should prevail through the next 3 Muhurats after sunset.On the day of Chhoti Holi, there is this custom of playing with colours and applying to each other.
