North Cornwall
The rocky coast of North Cornwall contains some of England's most magnificent, surf-washed beaches. Watergate Bay, near Newquay, has two miles of golden sand, pounded by Atlantic rollers and backed by cliffs and caves. Peregrine falcons, gulls and fulmars wheel overhead and you can spot strawberry anemones and crabs among the rock pools.
North Norfolk
There is a haunting quality to the creeks and salt marshes of North Norfolk, set under vast dome-like skies. Explore them safely by walking from Burnham Overy Staithe along a causeway to a vast dune-backed beach, or by taking a boat trip from Morston to see the resident seal colony at Blakeney Point.
Exmoor National Park
Exmoor National Park, which extends across north Devon and west Somerset, contains wonderfully varied landscapes of wild heather moorland, heath and deep wooded combes of ancient oaks. From windswept Dunkery Beacon, the highest point, you can see swathes of south west England laid out below you—moors, rolling fields and the glittering sea beyond. Look out for Exmoor ponies and red deer, and on a clear night, the stars shine like diamonds.
Northumberland
Although the coast of Northumberland provides countless magnificent views, the interior is just as impressive. There is something special about standing on Hadrian's Wall, at the top of Houseteads Fort, knowing that nearly 2,000 years ago Roman soldiers walked this very turf. Through summer and winter, they'd have stared out across this same landscape to the Tyne Valley and Scottish borders, perhaps longing for the olive groves and cypress trees of home.
