He was on July 20, 1950, in Delhi. He is graduated from Aligarh Muslim University. His passion about acting brought him in National School of drama in 1973. He married to Mnara but they parted way in 1982. He married to Ratna Pathak in 1982 and they have two sons Imad and vivan.
In 1975, He made his debut in movie Nishant and won the award for National Award in best film category and was nominated for the Oscars.
