The Madhya Pradesh government will give a compensation of Rs one crore to the kin of soldiers from the state who die in the line of duty, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan told the state Assembly on Wednesday.

The state government's decision came in view of the objections raised by the opposition members for approving a compensation of Rs one crore to the next kin of five farmers who were killed in police firing, in Mandsaur, last month.

BJP veteran Raghunandan Sharma has openly criticised Chouhan. "Why should Rs 1 crore be given to the families of the agitating farmers? Even army soldiers who attain martyrdom do not get that kind of money."

Chouhan targeted the Congress and said: "Opposition members are questioning me. They are asking me why I gave compensation of Rs 1 crore to those whose family members died in the police firing. I just want to say I have my own style of working."

Chouhan was replying to the discussion on adjournment motion brought in the State Assembly. He stated that opium smugglers were engaged in the violence during farmers’ agitation and they would not be spared at any cost.
