BHOPAL: A 35-year-old journalist who was investigating illegal sand mining cases in Bhind district of Madhya Pradesh was run over by a truck on Monday morning, recognized as Sandeep Sharma. He was working with a regional news channel.

Police said they have formed an SIT team to look into the case.  As per the Sources o ANI said they have detained the truck driver and he is being interrogated.

Driver of the truck was arrested by the police on Monday night from Bhind who identified as Ranbir Yadav.The driver hails from Gadu Pura village.

The truck, with registration number MP 07 HB 4164, belonged to Bhaskar Sharma, a resident of Gwalior as ANI reported.

As per the driver, in order to save a woman's life, TV journalist Sandeep Sharma was run over by his truck.

"I was trying to save a woman when I took the turn. I didn't even see the side glass," said the accused to ANI.

“Driver of the truck which hit the journalist reporting on sand mafia yesterday, arrested” , said SS Kushwaha,TI,City Kotwali,

He added, 'person has admitted that he was driving the vehicle at time of the incident. SIT team is questioning & doing investigation.

The death has sparked off political uproar with the Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia demanding a CBI probe into the case and chief minister Shivraj Singh jumping in to defend his government and assuring that safety of journalists would be ensured at all costs. The Bhind Press Club has also demanded an impartial probe in the case.

"Security of journalists is our priority and strict action will be taken against the culprit,"  CM Chouhan told reporters.
