To answer the roll call, the government of Madhya Pradesh has made it mandatory to reply with a "Jai Hind" instead of replying with "Yes, ma'am" or "Yes, Sir". According to reports, the state education board said that this change will instill a sense of patriotism among the students.
In November 2017, Madhya Pradesh School Education Minister Vijay Shah said that replying roll-calls with "Yes, Sir or Yes, Ma'am" does not depicts patriotism. He also said that this step will be followed in all 1.22 lakh government schools. Whereas this thing will be optional for all the private schools in the state. With this, an advisory will also be issued to all private schools.
This idea of roll-call reply was first announced on an experimental basis in Satna district in October last year. However, Congress leader KK Mishra criticized this government move. During an interview, he said that we cannot force patriotism. There is no need to make it compulsory, the government should first think about the quality of education, lack of teachers in Government schools.
Meanwhile, the BJP government had earlier already instructed schools to hoist the Tricolour and sing the national anthem daily in schools.
