MANGALURU: The accused in the sensational Manipal minor’s rape and murder case has controlled to escape on easy methods to Hiriyadka jail in Udupi, right here on Sunday. The accused was identified as 39-year-old Basappa Kamballi. The police have asked the public to inform them in case the accused is observed anyplace.

According to the sources, the Udupi superintendent of police, Nisha James, said that the accused has managed to escape from the police custody while he was being transported to the jail. The incident happened around 7:30 pm on Sunday. The kidnap, rape, and murder of a 17-year-old had taken place at Moodusagri of Shivalli village in Udupi on March 9. He was booked under IPC Sections 376 A, 366 A, 302 and Section 6 of POCSO Act.

Meanwhile, James has sought information from the public and guided that if he is seen by anyone, the police should be immediately informed about the location. The accused had lured the minor girl for a job with a higher salary on the pretext of which, he took her to an isolated place, raped her and later strangulated her using dupatta. The case had created public outrage in the city.
