Meet Om Prakash Rawat, to take Charge as new CEC today

New Delhi [India], Jan 23 (NT): Om Prakash Rawat, who has been appointed as the next Chief Election Commissioner of India, will take over the charge on Tuesday.

The Union Law Ministry under the headship of Ravi Shankar Prasad on Sunday has appointed senior-most Election Commissioner Om Prakash Rawat as the next Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) as the current A.K. Joti retired on Monday.

Former Finance Secretary Ashok Lavasa was appointed as Election Commissioner to pack the position created by Rawat’s elevation.

Rawat will take charge on Tuesday 23 Jan 2018.He will have possession of almost a year till his retirement in December 2018. He will keep an eye on elections in Tripura, Meghalaya and Nagaland planned next month. The decisive States like Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Chattisgarh will also hold the Election under his timepiece.

Rawat is a past Madhya Pradesh cadre IAS officer and Born on December 2, 1953.

Sunil Arora is the other Election Commissioner in the three-member Election Committee.He is presently the second senior-most Election Commissioner will continue until April 2021. As per rule, he will be the CEC during the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

Former finance secretary Ashok Lavasa was appointed Election Commissioner on Sunday and His appointment will come into effect from the day he assumes office. (NT)
