Good news coming for India's Mirabai Chanu has won the country's first weightlifting medal at the 2017 World Championship being held in Anaheim, USA. Weightlifter of India Chanu won the gold medal after lifting a total of 194 kg in the format 48kg competition. Chanu lifted Jerk for a total of 194kg in total. This is huge in terms of achievement at the world stage by an Indian weighlifter ever.

She is just 23-year-old and lifted 85 kg in Snatch and 109kg in clean and jerk for a total of 194kg to end India’s 22 year wait for a World Championship gold. Sydney Olympics bronze medal-list Karnam Malleswari is the only other lifter from India to have won the gold medal in the World Championship. She had achieved that feat in the 1994 and 1995 edition in the 54kg category.

This is India's first medal at the World Championships after Karnam Malleswari's gold in China in 1995. Mirabai Chanu after winning gold "I owe a lot to my coach Vijay Sharma for this medal. We have worked really hard for this and hopefully, I will be able to replicate this in Tokyo in 2020,"

In Anaheim, Chanu was always considered a medal contender but it looked like the Indian may have to settle for silver with Thailand’s Thunya Sukcharoen needed just match her 109 kg attempt in clean and jerk to clinch the top spot. Chanu is currently working with Indian Railways and comes from a humble background in Manipur. Thailand's Thunya Sukcharoen finished in second place with a total of 193 kg while Colombia's Ana Iris Segura bagged the bronze with a total lift of 182 kg. India's Sanjita Chanu however, finished fifth in her category.
