Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala has targeted the Modi government over delay in revealing the truth of the death of 39 Indians in Mosul, Iraq.

“Congress has expressed grief at the death of 39 Indians in Iraq. Modi Government has passed all limits of heartlessness when the whole world was saying they have died, the Indian Government assured the country and the kin seven times that they are alive,” said Randeep Surjewala.

Surjewala, in a backlash to Swaraj’s comment accusing Congress of playing politics on the tragic issue, said it was the latter who is playing politics.

“Unfortunately the one who is playing politics on this issue is Sushma Swaraj ji. She misled the parliament and kin seven times. Today Martyrs Foundation announced they will hold a media briefing on the issue, so as a result Government panicked and announced before them,” said Surjewala.

Sushma Swaraj reiterated that the announcement was not made earlier because the people were missing and any concrete evidence about them being dead or alive was not found until then.

Earlier in the day, Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj had announced and confirmed the death of 39 Indians who were held hostages in Iraq and no concrete information about them being dead or alive was available in a press conference.

Swaraj informed the Rajya Sabha about the tragic deaths and later to the Lok Sabha where the proceedings were disrupted due to ruckus created by leaders of opposition parties including Jyotiraditya Scindia of Congress.
