First let me tell you that Murder on the Orient Express is a 2017 American mystery drama film directed by Kenneth Branagh with a screenplay by Michael Green, based on the 1934 novel of the same name by Agatha Christie . All of us who have read the book are aware that the plot is based on how private detective Hercule Poirot solves a murder mystery on board the train named Orient Express. As opposed to popular belief, the story is not based on the actual Orient Express which operated till 2009. Instead, the plot of Christie’s novel is based on the luxury train named Simplon Orient Express, which operated between the years 1883 to 1977 in the first phase, before it was restored and put back to service again. Although the original train runs on a route which is very different from the journey it takes in Christie’s plot, let’s take a look at how the journey would have been in real life.
Istanbul
The story of the Murder on the Orient Express starts with detective Poirot boarding the Orient Express from the Turkish capital of Istanbul. A destination which is still in the bucket list of a lot of people who would love to explore the most beautiful places on earth, Istanbul is known to offer a unique blend of Europe and the Middle East in its unique metropolis and cultural depths. The city beautifully showcases the cultural richness of Turkey along with fine touches of history, a thriving contemporary art scene, chic designer boutiques and happening nightclubs.
Sofia
The Bulgarian capital comes up as the first stop of the Orient Express in the story. Even though Sofia already grabs a lot of tourist eyeballs because of being a prominent European town, the city has enough reasons for finding its well-deserved spot in the world tourist map. Known for being home to an exceptionally slow pace of life (in a good way), this place happens to be the perfect destination for travellers looking to unwind and relax during their vacation. And then there’s history, unique architectural grandeur in the form of ancient Ottoman mosques, museums to explore, restaurants serving delicacies, clubs offering enough dose of the happening and hiking trails for the nature lover.
Belgrade
In its journey through the capital cities, Orient Express’ third stop comes across as Belgrade. The Serbian capital serves up the perfect blend of the old and the new to travellers on a platter. And adding some spice to that is the city’s unending hunger to grow, develop and make its way toward the top of world’s economic powers—keeping it busy and fast-paced at all times. T
Zagreb
Zagreb can easily be called as one of the best stops for the Orient Express. Not because of how the story unfolds thereafter, but because how amazing the Croatian capital can be for the world of travellers. While the country is already a favourite among globetrotters from all parts of the world, Zagreb offers everything good for a traveller, be it in the form of periodic architectural grandeur or the cultural richness through its theatres and beautiful cobbled streets or the natural beauty presented in the form of stunning beaches. Some of the biggest attractions in the city include the 18th- and 19th-century Austro-Hungarian buildings, museums, churches, theatres, lakes, beaches and more.
