The results of the crucial 81-seat Nanded-Waghala Municipal Corporation (NWMC) announced today as Congress is leading 45 seats out of which BJP holding the lead of 5 seats. Nanded is the home lawn of Congress leader and former Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan, who is an MP from the constituency. The Congress is set for a huge victory in Nanded as the party has won 45 of the 81 seats while leading in another 20 seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has so far managed to win two seats while the Shiv Sena has just opened its account. Congratulatory messages have started pouring in for Ashok Chavan and Maharashtra Congress on Twitter.

It is a high-stakes battle for the ruling BJP and the Congress in Nanded. Although a Congress stronghold for the last 15 years, this time Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis addressed a high-pitched rally in Nanded days before the polling and targeted the Congress and the Shiv Sena. This time, 578 candidates are contesting the election to Nanded Municipal Corporation. Of the 81 seats, 41 are reserved for women, 15 for Scheduled Caste candidates, two for Scheduled Tribe candidates and 22 seats for Backward Class communities. Nanded Municipal Corporation has 3.96 lakh registered voters of whom 60 percent turned out to vote on Wednesday.
