Telecommunication Regulator TRAI reduced the number of mobile number portability (MNP) on January 31 by about 79%. Where the first customers had to pay 19 rupees for the number portability, the maximum charge was now Rs 4.

In a statement, TRAI said that the new rate will be applicable from the date of official Gazette notification. Under the MNP system, a customer can change service provider without changing their existing mobile number. If he wishes, he can urge his service provider to shift from one technology to another.

In this system, customers have got the facility not only porting their licensed service area (LSA) but also porting numbers in any LSA across the country. Due to the decreasing per-port transaction cost, TRAI decided to reduce the porting fee.

TRAI fixed the porting charge of 19 rupees in November 2009. When the government introduced mobile number portability (MNP), then MNP was only applicable in Circle. It was extended by the Central Government in July 2015 to the whole country. The facility of MNP was started on July 3, 2015. With this feature, users can change mobile operator without changing their number.
