Japan is the perfect combination of the bustling cities, which are easy to get around because of their public transport works on time, traditional architecture and incredible gardens. Then underpinning it, the people are polite and friendly and everything’s clean.

And while Tokyo is fast and futuristic, and Osaka is renowned as Disneyland for foodies, nowhere offers a step back in time like Kyoto, with its 1000-plus Buddhist temples, traditional tea ceremonies, obanzai (seasonal, hyper-local food), and the chance to meet a real-life geisha (although here they’re called geiko).

The whimsical pink blooms of the sakura trees are, in reality, just one slice of the botanical pie being served up in Kyoto throughout the year. The changing of the seasons is a spectacle here, blossoming through different spectrums of cherries, camellias, azaleas, wisteria, and more. In fact, the city’s apprentice geisha (maiko) change their hair ornaments 12 times a year to represent a seasonal motif.

There’s also Kyoto’s Nishiki Market, with Michelin-starred restaurants and traditional tea houses, where you can do as locals do and kuidaore (“eat until you drop”).

The former imperial capital of Japan is also a heavyweight of temples and shrines, and here you’ll find Kinkaku-ji (the famed Golden Pavilion) and the architectural splendor of Fushimi-Inari-Taisha with its vibrant orange torii (gates).

When To Visit

In terms of the best time of year to visit, spring and autumn provide the best weather, but that also makes them the most popular, so you need to book well in advance.There is another season that’s opening up called the wisteria season … everyone knows cherry blossom season (but) I am quite partial to the September-October season, the autumnal season. There are slightly fewer travelers, and still that great seasonal contrast.
