PM Modi to address IIT-B's convocation ceremony

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], Aug 11 (NT): Prime Minister Narendra Modi will on Saturday visit Mumbai to address the 56th annual convocation of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay amid student fury.

Taking to micro-blogging website Twitter PM Modi wrote, “Leaving for Mumbai, where I will join the convocation ceremony at IIT-B. Looking forward to interacting with bright youngsters. Will also inaugurate the new building of the Department of Energy Science and Engineering as well as Centre for Environmental Science and Engineering”.

PM Modi's visit, however, has erupted a debate with student groups from IIT-Bombay questioning the reason behind it. On Friday, in a statement shared on social media, students of IIT-Bombay also questioned the government’s current “anti-student politics” as First Post reported.

According to Hindustan times a number of groups of students questioned the low budget allotment to higher education as well as they are not happy as the Government of India-Post Matric Scholarship (GoI-PMS) for students from reserved categories (SC, ST and OBC) is discontinued in institutes like Tata Institute of Social Sciences. Students are also anguished because PM Modi led Center failed to pass the new Higher Education Committee of India (HECI) Bill.

However, the student groups, clarified that there would be no barrier stopping the PM Modi from addressing the event, or making an entry to the campus.

The Prime Minister will also launch the new building of the Department of Energy Science and Engineering and Centre for Environmental Science and Engineering at IIT Bombay.

Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Prakash Javadekar, Maharashtra Governor Vidyasagar Rao and state Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will also be present on the occasion. (NT)
