After 70 years of independence 'shameful' incident' still occurring: Prez on Kathua case

Katra (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], Apr 18 (NT): President Ram Nath Kovind on Wednesday came down deeply on the evil-doers of the Kathua rape and murder case. He further called it a 'shameful' incident.

While addressing 6th convocation of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University in Katra here, Pres Kovind raised questions that what kind of society we are developing in.

"After, 70 years of independence such an incident occurring in any part of the country is shameful. We have to think what kind of society we are developing. It is our responsibility to ensure such a thing does not happen to any girl or woman," he said.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti also uttered similar concern.

She stated, " How can someone do such a cruel thing to a small girl who is a manifestation of Mata Vaishno Devi, there is something wrong with the society."

There has been gigantic  hue and cry over the recent cases of gang rapes in Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir and Unnao in Uttar Pradesh. An eight-year-old girl child in Kathua in the Jammu region, who hailed to a wandering Bakerwal community, had departed from near her home in the forests on January 10.  After a week, her body was recovered in the same area, and medical examination barbed towards sexual assault and torture.
