Today, Ragala Venkat Rahul won a gold medal in the Commonwealth Games 2018 by lifting a total weight of 338kg (151+187) in the men's 85kg weightlifting event. It is said to be the fourth gold medal of India and sixth medal in weightlifting competitions as well as in the CWG.

Rahul impressed with a successful lift of 147kg in his first snatch attempt. After this, he went on to lift 151kg in his third and final lift after failing to carry the same weight in the second. He continued his good work lifting 182kg in his first clean and jerk attempt to jump to a top spot in the standings. His second lift of 187kg took him to a total weight of 338kg that remained his best as he faltered in the final attempt of 191kg. Luck also went in Rahul's favour with silver medalist Don Opeloge of Samoa failing to lift 191kg in his third and final attempt that helped Indian clinch the honours.

He qualified for the CWG 2018 by winning gold at the 2017 Commonwealth Senior Weightlifting Championships also in Gold Coast. There he lifting a total of 351kg (156kg in snatch and 195kg in clean & jerk). In fact, he won two gold medals in junior and senior categories and setting a couple of records. He won two gold medals in the men's 85kg categories at the Commonwealth Senior weightlifting championships held in Australia, with a standout total lift of 351kg (156kg in snatch, 195kg in clean & jerk). The youngster from Guntur created two records and won two gold medals in the 85kg category

Rahul's breakthrough appearance came at the age of 17 years when he won two gold medals in the youth and junior categories of the Commonwealth Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championship in Malaysia in 2013.
Rahul, 20, and has a younger brother Varun who also happens to be a weightlifter and also qualified for the CWG 2018.
