Senior Congress leader and actor-turned-politician Raj Babbar has dismissed the news of him resigning as the Uttar Pradesh Congress state president terming it as a rumour on Wednesday.

“I don't know where this rumour is doing the rounds. In any case, all of us in Congress are party workers, posts and positions are symbolic,” said Babbar.

Earlier in the day, several leading news portals widely reported resignation of Raj Babbar from the post of Uttar Pradesh Congress president after Babbar had spoken about a new system being implemented in the party and he will readily accept any responsibility given to him by the party president.

Soon after the news spread, Congress Member of Parliament Pramod Tewari clarified that Raj Babbar has not resigned and the reports claiming so are baseless.

It was widely speculated that after Rahul Gandhi’s speech recently in which he urged the veteran leaders of the party to step aside, Babbar had followed the suit after Goa Congress president’s and Gujarat Congress president’s resignation on Tuesday.

Another speculation cited the recent awful defeat in the Lok Sabha by-polls in Gorakhpur and Phulpur as the reason for the move.
