The House of senior legislative members is to be expected to send the legislation creationover instant triple talaq or talaq-e-biddat a criminal offence, with a imprison term of up to three years, to a select working group.

Cross-party discussions are to be expected to be seized on the subject ahead of the Bill comes to the Rajya Sabha on January 2.

Senior Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge had hard-pressed for the Bill to be sent to a standing working group. The Congress is expected to a put together similar demand in the Upper House also. In the Lok Sabha, Congress MPs Sushmita Dev and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury had approached towards amendments in the hunt for an independent corpus for affected women and to take out the “criminality” clause in the legislation.

According to agency sources, the government had at first intended to table the Bill on Friday, as it is typically a lean day for Parliament with most MPs send-off for their constituencies by afternoon.

“We got a whiff of the government’s plan to table the Bill when the Opposition benches would have been thinly occupied. We phoned up Opposition party leaders to press Chairman M. Venkaiah Naidu to assure that the Bill will not be tabled on Friday,” a senior Congress leader said as quoted by The Hindu.
