The term Raksha Bandhan means the bond of protection, obligation, or care. On this day, a sister ties Rakhi on the wrist of a brother and he promises to protect her. Sister also prays for the long life, success and well being of her brother. This year the auspicious time to tie Rakhi is from 05:59 AM to 5:25 PM on Sunday. This date often suffers from Bhadrakal. According to tradition, no auspicious work is done in Bhadrakal, therefore, in this period Rakhi Bandings are forbidden. This year Raksha Bandhan will be free from Grahan, therefore it will be auspicious for the sisters.

Rakhi is basically referred as the Raksha Sutra or protection thread. According to Bhavishya Purana, Indra the King of Devas was advised by Deva Guru Brihaspati to wear a Rakhi as a protection against enemies (Demons) when he was facing defeat at the hands of Vritra Asura. Accordingly, consort of Indra Sachi Devi tied a Rakhi to Indra.
