Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, on Monday, during the second Test against Sri Lanka, became the fastest bowler to claim 300 Test wickets. The Chennai spinner took four wickets in the second Sri Lanka innings and eight in total with 4/67 in the first innings, to surpass former Australia bowler Dennis Lillee to claim the record. While Lillee had achieved the feat in 56 matches, Ashwin did it in his 54th match. With this, Ashwin also completed 50 Test wickets in 2017 calendar year. Needing four wickets in the second innings to achieve the milestone, Ashwin ripped through Sri Lanka's lower order as he dismissed Dasun Shanaka (17), Dilruwan Perera (0) and Rangna Herath (0) to take his tally to 299 wickets before rattling the stumps of Lahiru Gamage (0) to reach the 300th wicket.

In his 54th internation test matches, he has given away 7520 runs with the best figure of 7 wicket for 59 runs in an innings being his best. His average is stupendous at 25.30 in 53 Tests. During the second Test against Sri Lanka, Ravichandran Ashwin took eight wickets in the match. He scalped Lahiru Gamage to reach this milestone. Along with the wicket, India also won the second Test match by 239 runs and an innings to take a 1-0 lead in the three-Test series. The third and final Test of the series will be played in Delhi from December 2.
