Row over Tipu Jayanti celebrations: Section 144 imposed in 9 districts, BJP leader M Nagaraj booked

Bengaluru: The protest in opposition to Karnataka government-sponsored celebrations for the birth anniversary of the divisive 18th-century monarch of former Mysore kingdom, Tipu Sultan, has intensified. The state wrapped up in a thick security blanket amid threats of protest by the saffron party BJP and many Hindu outfits.

As a defensive measure, prohibitory orders have been compressed in scores of districts of the southern state and officials have stated that no processions, either in favor or against the occasion will be permitted. As per reports by ToI, local BJP leader M Nagaraj has been in prison by the police.

Highly structured security arrangements have been made in districts like Kodagu and Chitradurga, coastal regions among others, where local communities are contrasting to the celebrations, as PTI reported.

 Reporrts suggested that Around 500 police personnel along with officials have been deployed in and around Vidhana Soudha .DCPs of different zones in the city will be in charge of security in their respective authority and around 15,000 police personnel will be manning the city.

Tipu Jayanti celebrations at the Vidhana Soudha were conducted in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara as Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy was not in attendance due to health reasons. Karnakata Minister DK Shivakumar also was present at the event. Earlier, the state government had accused the BJP of trying to form communal conflicts between the Hindus and minorities over the issue of ‘Tipu Jayanti’ celebrations.
