Russia elects Putin as president to rule forth time

Russian President Vladimir Putin marked a landslide re-election win on Sunday, extending his political reign over the world's largest nation for another six years at a time when his ties with the West are on an aggressive route.

According to the official preliminary consequences after nearly 30 percent of the votes had been counted and Putin received 73.1 percent of votes.

The country's Central Election Commission said vote counting was proceeding more speedily than in the parliamentary elections to the State Duma as reported by DD news.

Critics made allegations that officials were duty-bound people to come to the polls to ensure that voter monotony at the one-sided contest did not lead to a low turnout.

The election commission documented that there were some irregularities, but was expected to dismiss wider condemnation and declare the overall result legitimate.

Crowds gathered in the heart of Russia's capital Moscow late on Sunday as polls for the presidential election concluded. A concert marking four years since Russia's takeover of Crimea turned into a festivity Vladimir Putin's re-election.

Putin thanked all voters for their support at his win and said Russia had a great future ahead of it provided its people stayed united.

Putin, speaking from a stage just off Moscow's Red Square in front of a cheering audience, said the election result was recognition of what had been attained in the past few years, despite complicated conditions.

Before leaving the stage to the round of applause, he led the throng in a chant of "Russia, Russia!"

Putin's thrashing win will extend his total time in office to almost a quarter of a century, until 2024, by which time he will be 71-year-old. Putin has promised to use his new term to beef up Russia's defense against the West and to lift living standards.
