The city itself is sectionalised by its canals and at its core is the 400-year-old UNESCO World Heritage canal ring.

A culture vulture’s paradise, the Dutch capital is home to some of the best museums in the world.

Before tackling the big ticket ones, get an understanding of the city’s transformation over the last eight centuries at the Amsterdam Museum.

Next, head to the Rijksmuseum and its rotating display of around 8,000 objects from an archive of one million-plus. Nearby is the van Gogh Museum which houses 200-plus paintings and 550 sketches from the famed artist — the largest collection of his works in the world.

Speaking of the Pipe, its most famous claim to fame is its street market — the largest daily market in Europe. Stretching a kilometre, its 300 or so stalls sell everything from clothes to spices. But if market-hopping is your thing — and you happen to be docked when it’s on — then the monthly IJ-hallen should be your go-to.
