On Saturday, the Indian shooter Sanjeev Rajput created a new Commonwealth Games record, laying claim to the gold medal in men's 50m Rifle 3 positions in Gold Coast [Australia]. Sanjeev shots a Games record of 454.4 to finish at the top ahead of Grzegorz Sych [448.4] of Canada and Dean Bale [441.2] of England at the Belmont Shooting Centre. The other Indian in the fray, Chain Singh, finished fourth. Both the Indians entered the final after securing a top-two finish in the qualification round with Sanjeev at top followed by Chain. However, it was Sanjeev who continued his exemplary form in the summit clash as well to give India its 19th gold of the CWG 2018.

In the qualification, Rajput scored 391 in kneeling, 399 in prone and 390 in standing, while Chain Singh, who was placed second, shot 389 398 and 379 for a cumulative score of 1166 . Experienced shooter Sanjeev bettered his silver-medal finish at the Glasgow Games in 2014. Besides securing a silver medal in 2014, he also won a bronze medal at the 2006 edition. The 37-year-old Arjuna awardee had a point to prove having failed to make it to the 12-member shooting team selected by the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) for the Rio Olympics 2016. Sanjeev shrugged off his disappointment by first winning a silver medal in 50m rifle the same year and then clinched another silver at the 2017 the Commonwealth Shooting Championships.
