Shujaat Bukhari, a senior journalist and two personal security officers were shot dead in Srinagar, on Thursday. The corpse of an Army jawan was found in a village in Pulwama district, who was abducted earlier.

Minister in the J&K government, Bashrat Bukhari’s brother was the editor of Rising Kashmir, an English daily. Bukhari and Aurangzeb, a Jawan were killed just 2 days before the unilateral ceasefire. According to people who witnessed the incident four terrorists wearing helmets and shalwar kameez were riding on two motorcycles outside the office of Rising Kashmir near Lal Chowk at 7.30pm just when Bukhari was approaching his vehicle.

The two riders started firing blindly and shot Bukhari and one of the PSOs on the spot. Another PSO was injured, who later died in the hospital.

According to sources, civilian was also injured in the firing.

Bukhari was also attacked in the year 2000, after which he was provided with a proper police protection. Bukhari was known for organising conferences in Kashmir for establishing peace in the valley. He was also involved in the Track II process with Pakistan.  A lot of questions are being raised against the unilateral ceasefire declared a month ago by the BJP. Home Minister, Rajnath Singh regarded it as “an act of cowardice”.

Singh tweeted, “The killing of @RisingKashmir editor, Shujaat Bukhari is an act of cowardice. It is an attempt to silence the saner voices of Kashmir. He was a courageous and fearless journalist. Extremely shocked & pained at his death. My thoughts and prayers are with his bereaved family.”
