Separate religion status to Lingayat a tactic to fulfil political goals: Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal

Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal has termed the decision to grant separate religion status to the Lingayat community as a tactic to fulfil political goals.

“Lingayat is a part of Hinduism. The matter of Lingayat as a separate religion is being brought up to fulfil political goals & divide Hindus,” said Meghwal.

Further, he said that the decision is to create a vote-bank by ‘dividing society’.

“Karnataka CM wants to reverse the decision of Manmohan Singh government on Lingayat community. Yeddyurappa ji comes from Lingayat community. Congress is doing so to prevent him from becoming CM by dividing society for votes. Weaker sections will be at a loss,” said Meghwal.

Ministry of Home Affairs said in a statement that the decision over this will be taken once the ministry receives a proposal from the Karnataka government.

On Monday, Karnataka cabinet had approved the demand of Lingayat seers and granted them a separate religion status on the recommendations of a committee headed by former judge HN Nagamohan Das. The move is seen as an appeasement tactic before the Karnataka state assembly election scheduled in May this year.

Karnataka State Minorities Commission had appointed a seven-member committee to submit a report on whether to grant Lingayat community as a separate religion which was headed by retired high court judge HN Nagamohan Das. The report, submitted to the government on March 2, said the community can be granted a separate religion status.
