Tokyo [Japan], Sep 20 (NT): With the aim “build a new country together”, Shinzo Abe is all set to become Japan’s longest-serving prime minister after he was at ease reelected as  a president of the ruling Liberal Democratic party [LDP] on Thursday.

Abe marked the win as taking 553 votes out of a total of 807. The win assures that he will continue as prime minister and is likely to use his mandate to push ahead with divisive plans to reinforce the legal status of Japan’s military, which is known as the self-defense forces.

Addressing on the eve of the vote among LDP MPs and party members, Abe said he was determined promised to take the lead in handing over a proud and optimistic Japan to younger generations.

Abe, easily beat his nearest opponent, former defence minister Shigeru Ishiba.

Abe’s win on Thursday successfully will extend his term in office by another three years. For the third term, paving the way to become the country's prime minister for three more years, If Abe is still in office in November 2019 will leave behind Taro Katsura, who was leader for 2,886 days . He  speeded over three consecutive terms – in the early 1900s.
