Somalia to prosecute against Female Genital Prosecution for the first time in History

The inhuman ritual of Female genital mutilation (FGM) has been practised for a long time in Africa, Asia and the Middle East, and within communities from countries in which FGM is common. The mutilation includes cutting or removal of some or all of the external female genitalia.
According to UNICEF, there are 200 million women living today in 30 countries—27 African countries, Indonesia, Iraqi Kurdistan and Yemen—have undergone the procedures. 

But today morning Somalia’s attorney general declared their first-ever prosecution in the history of Somalia as a 10-year-old girl bled to death.
Speaking at a conference on FGM in the capital, Mogadishu, on Wednesday, attorney general Ahmed Ali Dahir said he had sent a team of 10 investigators to interviews Deeqa Dahir Nuur’s parents and the village cutter who performed the fatal operation.
Deputy prime minister Mahdi Mohamed Gulaid, said that this is a cruel practice and should not be covered under the religious practices.

Talking to the reporters, prosecutors said, that this will send a strong message to all Somalian citizens and that this is a Defining Moment.

It is to be noted that, Somalia where 98% of all women and girls undergo FGM, the highest rate anywhere in the world.
