Record are made to be broken as South African batsman Marco Marais on Sunday broke a 96-year-old record by slamming the fastest triple hundred in first-class cricket and became the first batsman in history to get to the landmark in less than 200 deliveries.

Macro Marais, who came in to bat at No. 6 with his side Border were unstable at 84/4 against Eastern Province, took only 191 balls to score 300 runs which also include 13 sixes and 35 boundaries and in the process broke Charles Macartney's record, who took 221 balls to achieve the feat in a 1921 tour match against Nottinghamshire.

 

 

The 24-year-old reached his century mark in just 68 balls while he completed his double hundred in 139 balls. He was involved in a 428-run partnership with Brad Williams, who scored 113 runs from 174 balls. It is also the fifth-highest fifth-wicket stand in first-class cricket history. "I don't think anyone actually thinks they are going to get 300," Marais told The Daily Dispatch after his knock.

 

 

"I am really happy but I don't think it has fully sunk in yet. I am just so tired now. I think it will eventually hit me later tonight. I was striking the ball so well. I decided that I was just going to go hard at them and it came off in the end. "Batting with Bradley was really good. I said to him that he must just play his normal game and that I was going to try and be attacking from the start,
