In the recent years, cases of Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) have been increasing many folds. As per the reports, it is suggested that children or infants suffering from Spinal muscular atrophy could recover after a therapy by drug nusinersen. They also emphasized that the chances of recovery increase if the treatment of the child is started before the age of 7 months.
Medical science explains SMA  as a genetic disease which when comes into effect, it lays its effects on the motor neurons in the spinal cord and leads to muscle atrophy and also causes weakness in the body. This further causes issues relating to swallowing and breathing.
Researchers also informed that the newborns must be taken to the doctors regularly and on their visits, must be performed with various tests to ensure early diagnosis of diseases if any.
It has been postulated that SMA type 1 is the most usual and most fatal type of SMA.
SMA is reported to be caused due to mutations in the genetic make up of the infant.  The mutation could have been caused in the fetal life or after birth.

Early diagnosis could hence help in a better treatment and early recovery.
