span style="font-size:14px;">When we normally cook in our house then many times we have felt a certain degree of reluctance when it comes to chopping onions. This is a vegetable which is a crucial ingredient in the majority of Indian dishes. People avoid chopping this veggie because it makes you cry your eyes out.
Whether you like them sautéed, caramelized, pureed or fried, onions are a necessity for every kitchen. But your onion troubles will soon be a thing of the past. A new variety of onion, which is also sweeter, crunchier, smaller than the typical onion, has finally come out.
This new type of onion, which has been made without any genetic modification, lacks the pungent compound that is responsible for irritating your eyes and making you cry. These are the world's first 'tearless' onions and have been named 'sunions'.
The sunions are products of over three decades of research and development and have been made by initiating natural onion cross-breeding. In regular onions, the compounds responsible for pungency, either remain stable or increase over time. These are the same compounds which make sulphuric acid when they come into contact with the water in your eyes. However, in the case of the 'sunions', the level of these compounds actually decreases with time. Moreover, since the process of making these vegetables was natural, there won't be any anomalies or inconsistencies, when it comes to the amount of compounds in different onion bulbs.
Currently, these onions are only being grown in the states Washington and Nevada in the United States of America. The vegetable is expected to be available in the rest of the American states from March 2018.
