The next generation of telecom services in the country is the start of the fifth generation (5G). The telecom regulator started the consultation process for the next round of spectrum auction on Monday and in this phase, spectrum auction is also proposed for 5G services.

At the same time, the regulator has also sought fresh references to the evaluation system of 700 MHz bands because no company in the previous auction had come forward to buy this spectrum.

Where the regulator has asked the participants in its consultation letter when the upcoming auction should be held. At the same time, the regulator wants to know whether the Neelma will be provided with 'phased manner' considering the financial pressure on telecom companies.

The government plans to auction the spectrum used in 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz, 2500 MHz, 3300 3400 MHz and 3400 3600 MHz bands. The next auction is to be held in 2017.

Meanwhile, COAI, the top organization of cellular companies, has suggested that the government should not be hasty about spectrum auction this year because this industry is going through "huge financial crisis" and "uncertainties".

COAI says that 2019 will probably be the appropriate time for the 5G auction. COAI Director General Rajan Mathews said that it is very important to have a clear outline for spectrum auction, but the big question is when will the auction and how will the entire strategy be linked to the new telecom policy which is preparing the Department of Telecom.
