‘Thinking Out Loud’, the number hit song of 2104 by Ed Sheeran is in dispute again. The singer sued by Structured Asset Sales, a company which have copyright of part of ‘Let’s Get It On’, 1973 song of singer Marvin Gaye. The company claimed that “the melody, rhythms, harmonies, drums, bass line, backing chorus, tempo, syncopation and looping” is copied by Sheeran from Gaye’s 1973 hit. Reports suggested that Structured Asset Sales acquired the copyright from the son of Gaye’s late co-writer, Ed Townsend Jr. The company indulged in a business in which they invited musicians to sell off their future income in exchange for money upfront. The singer sued for the second time for the same song as the case which was filed on 11th June was rejected as the court denied from intervention in the matter. The plagiarism case is again filed with Sony/ATV Music Publishing, Atlantic Records and co-writer Amy Wadge by the company. The results and further proceeding on the case are unclear. This is not the first time when the ‘Shape of you’ singer caught in such controversies. Previously, in January only Sean Carey and Beau Golden, songwriters of ‘When I Found You’ have sought justice for stealing their song’s melody. Allegedly the copied melody used by Sheeran in the song ‘The Rest of Our Life’ that he wrote for country artists Faith Hill and Tim McGraw. Reportedly, he denied for such claims in the court.
Martin Harrington and Thomas Leonard, musicians of song ‘Amazing’ have filed an infringement lawsuit for using composition of their song in ‘Photograph’, the 2014 single of Ed Sheeran. The singer was not sued as the parties settled the case on some terms that were not revealed.
