In North America, Toyota Motor Company has announced the withdrawal of six lakh cars due to security defaults regarding the front passenger airbag inflators. The company has taken this decision under the direction of the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to safeguard vehicles' safety measures.

"Toyota will voluntarily replace airbag inflators as part of the company's preventive global recall campaign concerning air bag inflators... The replacement would be carried out free of cost at Toyota dealerships across India in a phased manner," the company said.

Takata and Japanese company TK Holdings of Japanese vehicle parts company announced the bankruptcy in June. The Japanese company had said that by 2019, it will recruit more than 100 million airbags worldwide.

According to the NHTSA, by the end of November 2017, 19 car companies had recovered 4.6 million Tokata Inflators from 3.4 million US vehicles. Takata guilty of fraud in 2016 was fined a bribe of $ 1 billion.

India does not have an official car recall policy, though the government is working to introduce one. The car industry currently follows a voluntary recall guideline issued by industry lobby grouping, Siam, but this is seen as ineffective. Vehicle recalls are not seen as a positive exercise in India with car companies fearing an adverse impact on demand after they call back vehicles to fix defects.
