Ludhiana (Punjab) [India], Jan 12 (NT): In the wake of their demand for reservation of seats in the Municipal Corporations, the transgender community of Punjab protested outside at the Deputy Commissioner's office looking for its consent to fight the upcoming Municipal elections in Ludhiana.

They protested by clapping their hands and dancing as demanding to permit them to fight polls in their ward.

The protesting transgender community made allegations that, the Supreme Court has also directed all the governments to give reservations in elections. Still, many state governments are not ready to give the reservations.

Looking for to obtain reservation for the third gender persons, a social organization Mahatar Sathi Jagriti Manch together with the protestors presented a memorandum to the District Administration on the matter.

President of Mahatar Sathi Jagriti Manch Kimti Rawal said that as per the Supreme Court verdict, the third gender should be given fundamental rights like Males and females. They should not be categorized on the basis of gender.

He suggested that the district authorities should read the verdict and must give them legal right to contest Municipal Corporation Polls. He further said Transgender should be given reservation in the forthcoming MC elections under the OBC category.
