New Delhi [India], Dec 29 (NT): The much expected Triple Talaq Bill will be introduced in Rajya Sabha next week.

The Bill making triple talaq against the law with up to three years in the detention center for the offender has taken another step with the Lok Sabha passing it.

The bill was passed amid hue and cry of most of the leading political parties in the Opposition, together with the Congress party, voting in favor of the bill, but with some cautions. It was passed after the House rejected a series of amendments approached by different Opposition members.

The Centre Govt. on Thursday termed the decision as 'historic' and averred confidence that it would be passed in Rajya Sabha as well.

The union law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, the day before, urged the Lok Sabha to not link Triple Talaq bill with religion, politics or vote bank.

The  leading opposition Congress party extended its support for the Triple Talaq bill tabled by the rulingModi-led  National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Government in the Lok Sabha, adding that there were firm ‘lacunae’ in it that required to be put right before bringing it into practice.

On the other hand, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) head Asaduddin Owaisi exhorted that the Triple Talaq bill “violated the fundamental rights of Muslims”.

The Draft of bill, if put into practice of a law, will make Triple Talaq a criminal offense. As per draft of bill It proposes a three-year imprison term for a Muslim man who divorces his wife in any form of spoken, written or by electronic means such as email, SMS, and WhatsApp.(NT)
