Tripura CM Manik Sarkar casts his vote at a polling booth in Agartala, he is an MLA from Dhanpur constituency. 59 out of the 60 constituencies have gone to vote today in Tripura. Elections in one constituency, Charilam will be held on March 12. Elections in Charilam were postponed after the death of CPM candidate Ramendra Narayan Debbarma. A total of 292 candidates are contesting the elections, out of which 23 are women. The counting of votes will take place on March 3. The Left front has been power in Tripura since 1978, except for 11 years (1972-1977 and 1988-1993) when the state was led by Congress. The Election Commission has appointed over 25 general observers, 8 police observers and 19 expenditure observers to oversee the poll process. 30,000 civil officials will be engaged in the conducting of elections.

Although voting begins at morning 7 AM in 3,214 polling stations across the state. Nearly 26 lakh voters will be casting their votes in Tripura today, out of which about half are women, 11 are third gender voters. 47,803 people will be voting for the first time today. BJP is battling close behind CPI-M and is expected to give the Left front a run for their money. This is the first time, in India's political history, the Left will be in direct competition with the BJP. Political developments in Tripura in 2016 and 2017 have set the stage for their first face-to-face battle as the saffron outfit has emerged as the key opposition party in this Communist-ruled north-eastern state.
